Persons over the age of 18, born on the territory of Moldova, irrespective of whether they hold the citizenship of another state and irrespective of whether they reside in the country or abroad, will acquire the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by recognition easier. Amendments to the Law on Citizenship no. 1024-XIV of June 2, 2000 entered into force at the end of last week.
Thus, the persons in the above mentioned category will be recognized as citizens of the Republic of Moldova from the moment of submitting the application in this respect, which will contain the consent of the applicant. In the country, the people concerned may apply to any Identity Documents Issuance Service or Multifunctional Center of the Public Services Agency. Those who are abroad can apply to diplomatic missions and consular offices of the Republic of Moldova. When registering the application, the applicants shall present the identity document in their possession and the civil status documents. Applicants, who do not have identity documents, will be identified according to the procedure established by the legislation in force.
The statistical data of the last years show that acquisition of Moldovan citizenship through recognition is the most requested procedure. Approximately 85 percent of applicants opt for this procedure. 1554 applications for Moldovan citizenship were submitted last year, of which 1309 were for the acquisition of citizenship by recognition. In the first quarter of this year 287 applications were registered, 245 of which were examined under the procedure for the acquisition of citizenship by recognition.
