Citizens of the Republic of Moldova must have an identity card from the age of 16. The first ID card is issued free of charge

According to the legislation in force, citizens of the Republic of Moldova residing in the Republic of Moldova are required to hold an identity card from the age of 16.

The first identity card of the citizen of the Republic of Moldova is issued free of charge within 20 business days, at any multifunctional center, regardless of the applicant’s place of domicile.

The presence of the child, accompanied by a legal representative (one of the parents, guardian or curator), is necessary in order to apply for an identity card. The documents required: the child’s birth certificate, identity card of the legal representative (as well as other documents, as appropriate).

If a person applies for an identity card during a period of up to one year before reaching the age of 16, the identity document is issued for a validity period till the age of 25.

According to the data from the State Register of Population, about 48000 children have reached or will reach the age of 16 by June 1, 2023, of which about 28400 hold a valid identity card of the citizen of the Republic of Moldova, about 3000 hold an identity card that is invalid or has a validity period expiring by June 1, 2023, and about 16500 have never obtained an identity card.
