Many of the vehicle owners have faced situations in which for various reasons, such as theft or natural calamity like floods, they were left without vehicle registration plates. What should you do in such situations?
If you are abroad
1. If you are abroad and have lost your car’s number plates, you must immediately go to the police authorities of the country where the number plates were lost or stolen to obtain the certificate confirming the loss/theft. By reporting the incident you will be sure that you are protected from possible fraudulent uses of number plates.
2. After reporting the loss to the police, it is important to apply to any transport registration office to obtain duplicate number plates instead of the lost/stolen ones. If you are abroad, you can authorize a person to represent your interests at the vehicle registration offices in the Republic of Moldova. You can obtain the power of attorney at the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Moldova in the respective country or at the competent authorities for legalization of documents by apostille.
3. The following documents must be presented at the vehicle registration subdivision:
- identity document of the car owner, in the original;
- identity document of the authorized person;
- power of attorney legalized according to the established order;
- certificate from the police authorities of the country where the registration number plates were lost or stolen (translated into the state language, without the need to be re-registered).
If you are in the country
To obtain duplicate number plates in case of their loss/theft you must go to any transport registration office to submit the application and the following documents:
- identity document of the car owner, in the original;
- copy of the vehicle registration certificate;
- declaration of loss/theft/damage of registration number plates;
- proof of payment for the requested service.
The tariff for the service of issuing duplicate number plates for a vehicle is 550 lei (a set of two plates) and 350 lei (one plate) - within up to 3 business days.
